Read this before you order — it takes 30 seconds

This caster screws in. It does not push in. Flip your chair or cart over and pull one caster out. Look at the metal post above the wheel:

• Spiral threads on the post — you're in the right place. Confirm it measures 1/4" across.
• Smooth post with a small springy metal ring near the top — that's a grip-ring stem, and this caster will not fit. Don't order it.

Worth knowing: most modern office chairs use a 7/16" grip-ring stem, not a threaded stem. Threaded stems are common on older office chairs, utility carts, garment racks, wire shelving, display stands, dollies, workbenches, and light furniture. If that's what you've got, read on.

A note on thread pitch

1/4"-20 means the post is 1/4" in diameter with 20 threads per inch. Both numbers have to match your socket. A 1/4"-28 stem is the same diameter but a different pitch — it will start to turn, then cross-thread and damage the socket. If it doesn't spin in smoothly with light finger pressure for the first two or three turns, stop and back it out. You've got the wrong pitch, not a caster that needs more force.
